Livestock Operations Manager (Yard Manager)
Job Description
Position Summary
The Livestock Operations Manager reports directly to the owner and is responsible for all yard and livestock operations: receiving, penning, sorting, feeding, animal welfare, and sale-day cattle flow.
This is a leadership role with authority equivalent to the Office Manager, and the two positions work as peers to run the business day to day.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee receiving, penning, sorting, and shipping of cattle on sale days and throughout the week
- Supervise the Yard Supervisor and all yard positions; schedule, train, and hold the crew accountable
- Coordinate contracted cowboy crews and ensure horses and riders are in place for every sale
- Ensure accurate head counts, EID/tag logging, and lot order for the auction run list
- Manage feed, water, and pen conditions; maintain animal welfare and biosecurity standards
- Maintain yard equipment, pens, chutes, scales, and facilities; report repair needs
- Communicate with consignors, buyers, and truckers in English and Spanish
- Enforce safety practices for employees, contractors, and visitors
- Work directly with the owner and Office Manager on operational planning and improvements Requirements
- Bilingual English/Spanish — REQUIRED
- Proven experience in livestock handling, feedlot, ranch, or auction market operations - Prior supervisory experience leading a yard or ranch crew
- Strong cattle-handling skills and knowledge of low-stress handling practices
- Ability to work sale days, weekends, and long hours during auction weeks
- Physically able to work outdoors in all weather and handle livestock safely
- Valid driver's license - Reliable, organized, and able to make decisions under pressure
Preferred
- Familiarity with cross-border cattle trade and import protocols
- Basic equipment maintenance skills
