Position Title: Farm Assistant
Reports To: Community and Resources Development Director

Salary Grade: $20-25.00 hourly/full-time DOE
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Farm Assistant is responsible for assisting with the growth of the Tribe’s Suchumumu Regenerative Farm and Composting Program located at the Suchumumu Farm Site in Jamestown, CA. The Farm Assistant will report to the Farm Lead, and in collaboration with the Farm Coordinator, will help execute all Farm tasks and responsibilities. The Farm Assistant will also help coordinate the work of the Tribal Climate Fellows with support from the Farm Lead and Farm Coordinator. The vision for the Farm Assistant is to help grow and expand the Tribe’s Suchumumu Farm to supply produce to the Casino-Resort, Tribal community, farm stands, local economy market and CSA program. The aim of the Tribal Farm and Composting program is to close the loop on Tribal lands through organic composting and increase the capacity of the Tribe to grow its own food.
CORE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Supports daily agricultural operations by planting, tending, and harvesting crops, while also feeding and caring for chickens and, as the farm grows, other farm livestock as appropriate.
· Crop Cultivation, which includes soil and bed prep, planting, maintenance, and irrigation.
· Chicken Coop Care includes daily maintenance, health monitoring, composting, and chicken facility upkeep.
· Harvesting and post-harvest processing; gathering produce, processing, and record-keeping.
· Equipment and site maintenance, operating tractors, fixing hand tools, general farm-related repairs and market assistance.
· Participate in the creative thinking process regarding the improvement and enhancement of the Tribal Suchumumu Farm.
· Prepare materials, both independently and/or collaboratively, to be used for related projects.
· Effectively communicate and coordinate with department co-workers, as well as staff at all associated Chicken Ranch Rancheria entities, along with members of the community.
· Demonstrated ability to receive instruction and implement into action.
· Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Must be 18 years of age or older.
· Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED.
· Farm-related certifications will be required to be completed and passed within 60 days of employment. Any associated costs will be covered by the department.
· Passionate about sustainable food systems and working outdoors.
· Attention to detail, organization, and a strong team ethic are vital to the success of this role.
· Demonstrated professional etiquette.
· Experience operating a tractor and string-trimming farm lands.
· Agricultural experience desired.
· Must be able to adhere to all confidentiality requirements.
· Should have a general knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
· Must be able to work occasional weekends, Holidays, and/or flexible hours.
· Must pass a background and drug check.
· Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable as this position requires occasional driving/operations of company vehicles.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
· Adherence to attendance and punctuality standards, including access to reliable transportation to and from the office.
· Adherence to dress code and/or related uniform requirements.
· Knowledge and proper use of common office equipment including copiers, printers, phone systems, etc.
· Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
· Ability to work with minimal supervision and complete designated tasks within a reasonable timeframe.
· Experience working with Native American organizations and/or businesses is desirable but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly should be able to sit, climb, kneel, and walk some distance between locations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and the ability to push at least 50 pounds.
- This position often requires the employee to be on their feet and working outdoors the majority of the day.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, in all safe weather conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both in an office and outdoor environment, primarily outdoors. Applicants will be required to adapt to these activities. Extended periods of standing may be required.
